Why the ‘if you haven’t used it in a year, donate it’ rule doesn’t apply to hoarders, packrats, and clutterbugs. The standard decluttering tips of one-in-one-out, get rid of anything you haven’t used in a year, and remove duplicates simply won’t work with a hoarder. Hoarders face unique challenges and obstacles with it comes to organizing and decluttering their homes.

The fairy-tale scenario of removing all of one’s belongings from their house and neatly stacking everything on the front lawn, while a cleaning team flutters about scrubbing the empty home, and a team of professional organizers, therapists, and junk removers help declutter and sort the curated piles before expertly organizing the surviving treasures back into the home all within an hour’s time only works in tv land. UNIQUE CHALLENGES HOARDERS FACE WHEN DECLUTTERING

Hoarders experience elevated levels of stress and anxiety when faced with discarding items this anxiety, coupled with a crippling fear of making the wrong decisions about which items to keep versus which to discard, often results in homes filled to the brim with clutter in the form of trash, neglected collections, mountains of clothes, and countertops full of expired food and dirty dishes. Other people begin hoarding in response to a traumatic life event such as the death of a loved one (where they often inherit their belongings), a divorce, or a sudden loss of one’s personal possessions due to a natural disaster. out of fear that if they were to part with the item, then the information would be lost forever. Some people hoard information in the form of books, papers, receipts, etc. Fear that they may need a specific item ‘one day’ and when that day comes, they worry that they may not be able to afford to replace the item or that it won’t be available for them to purchase. If you or someone you love suffers from hoarding disorder, I urge you to seek treatment today. Please do not take the information contained in this post as medical advice. My linen press has remained organized except for a few extra shoes sneaking in. I tackled my hot press earlier this year and I added extra storage to it. You might also enjoy my Monica press makeover. I have since added a new adjustable table and you can see that here. I added some extra Ikea storage and a new pegboard and I can happily report that I have kept my office tidy. Back in January I was drowning under a sea of unorganized craft supplies and I decided enough was enough and I tackled my office. If you enjoyed this video then you might also enjoy my small craft room declutter. I have put together a Youtube video where you can see the before and after of my small kitchen declutter. Now, I won’t become a minimalist anytime soon, I adore collecting my trinkets and I don’t class them as clutter but I do want to be more conscious with what I purchase and what comes into my home. I feel lighter and my home is easier to maintain and keep clean when I have less junk. I love the feeling of having less clutter in the home.

Over the past year or so I have been consciously buying fewer things and choosing to spend my money on travel. My house looks like it is clean and tidy but if you open a cabinet or wardrobe door things will fly out and hit you on the head. I have a really bad habit of hiding clutter behind the doors, drawers, and cabinets. Earlier in the year, you might remember I cleared out my Monica press and my craft room, well, I finally plucked up the courage to tackle my kitchen presses.

I have been putting off sorting through my kitchen cabinets for a long time now. I have been at it again, I have been decluttering and today I tackled my small kitchen and gave it a proper declutter and organization.
